Paddling Through Noosa’s Everglades
This Saturday Lewis and I got to knock off something that’s been on our Noosa bucket lists since we moved here: Explore the Noosa Everglades!
The Noosa Everglades are only miles from our house and are one of only two Everglade systems in the world (the other being in Florida). Over 44% of all Australia’s bird species reside within this region, 1,365 species of plants have been identified and over 700 native animals co-exist in the Noosa Everglades.
At 10am we met our boat in Noosaville at it’s dock on the Gympie Terrace and boarded our super comfortable and smooth purpose-built boat.

We toured with The Discovery Group, which is a local business here in Noosa that offers some pretty cool day and overnight tours around the Noosa Everglades as well as Fraser Island. The tour we were on was called the Bar-B-Canoe Tour and takes you on a lovely cruise through the Noosa Everglades, stopping for a tasty breakfast and BBQ lunch, and then gives you the opportunity to canoe through the peaceful waters of the Noosa Everglades.
The adventure began with a river cruise through the magnificent lakes and wetlands of the Noosa river to the start of the Noosa Everglades.

We stopped along the way for coffee, tea and biscuits at Fig Tree Point.

After eating we did a quick loop around the Melaleuca circuit track and I loved how I really felt like I was in the middle of a jungle or rainforest. Look at how beautiful it is!

I also thought the little boardwalk we docked at was totally insta-worthy…

After our breakfast break we boarded the boat again and cruised a little further on to Harry’s Hut.
I thought that our guide, Hendrick “Heinie”, really made the trip. Throughout the day he kept us entertained with his wealth of knowledge on the Noosa area and was always pointing out certain plants and birds that we may not have noticed.

You can really see why they call this area the “river of mirrors!”
Once at Harry’s Hut we enjoyed a lunch of either barramundi, steak or a quiche with coleslaw, potato salad, garden salad and juice before heading out for our canoe journey.

The Noosa Everglades, part of the Cooloola National Park, is recognised as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ and is the only river system in Australia that has its entire upper catchment protected in National Park meaning that the land up there is totally unpolluted and there are even parts of it that people haven’t walked on in over 50 years!
Especially once Lewis and I broke off from the group a bit and started canoeing down the river we really realized how untouched this pristine bit of land really was.

We kept taking breaks from paddling to take in the peacefulness of the river. It was totally silent around there aside from the sounds of the water rippling and birds chirping.

After we meet up with the group again at Fig Tree Point we hopped on board the boat and soared back into the dock in Noosaville for exactly 4:00PM. I really appreciated the fact that The Discovery Group provides buses that can pick you up and drop you off at wherever you are staying once your tour is over. Just makes the day go so much smoother and takes out the stress of having to find your way home after such a relaxing and nice day.

Thank you to The Discovery Group for inviting us to experience the BBQ Canoe Tour of the Noosa Everglades, we had a blast! As always, my opinions are my own!
