After Travel: Getting Back on Track with my Skincare Routine with Beautycounter
While traveling longterm can be extremely rejuvenating on the soul it’s sometimes not exactly rejuvenating for the body and skin.
Long hours baking in the sun, swimming in the sea and splashing in the pool can seriously dry out the skin and hair. Constantly being on the road can lead to some less than ideal nutrition choices and everyone knows the consequences of too many hours in stuffy airplane air.
Since being home this summer I’m putting my energy into getting back on track with my skincare regimen and fitness routines.
With that in mind, I have been eager to try a company that is dominating the scene in holistic, natural and SAFE skincare and beauty products: Beautycounter.

If you don’t already know Beautycounter is a first of it’s kind beauty and skincare company that is focused on making personal care products safer for everyone. Until I spent some time reading about Beautycounter I had NO idea about how harmful the products many of us use on a day to day basis are to our health. There are over 80,000 different chemicals on the market today that are found in everything from the shampoo, the sunscreen, the mascara, the foundation and even the soap that many of us use every. single. day.
The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. What’s pretty scary is that numerous health issues such as infertility, cancer, acne, and asthma can be linked to many of the ingredients we consume through our beauty and skincare products. Trying to figure wade through the lists and lists of unidentifiable chemical ingredients that make up many of the products we find at CVS and Sephora can be super daunting but Beautycounter does the work for you.
Without compromising the luxury, high quality that we expect from beauty and skincare products Beautycounter crafts all of their products from vetted, trusted, and REAL ingredients. They’ve banned the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals all listed on their “Never List.”
The more I read about Beautycounter the more I couldn’t believe how damaging some of the products I used every day actually were to me. Why aren’t more people talking about this?! I partnered with one of Beautycounter’s most lovely consultants, Caroline, and picked out a few of Beautycounter’s bestselling products to see if they lived up to the hype.
Here’s what I tried:

First of all I couldn’t get over how lux the packaging was. Everything is so beautifully curated and designed and I 100% didn’t feel like I was ‘giving up’ having high-end beauty products in exchange for healthy products.
I’ll start with the product I was most looking forward to trying: the Charcoal cleansing bar.

Charcoal seems to be the it thing at the moment as far as skincare and I was interested to see what that was all about. The customer reviews for the charcoal bar on Beautycounter’s website are GLOWING. People are legit raving about this interestingly coloured soap bar.
I’ll note too that my biggest skin issue is chronic acne. As fabulous as it is to spend nearly a year in a tropical climate my skin while I was in Australia was constantly sweaty and oily due to the heat and the consistent slathering of sunscreen on my face. So many of the reviews for the cleansing bar mentioned how much it helped clear up spotty skin when nothing else had worked. This soap couldn’t be easier to use (you literally just froth it around in your clean hands and massage it into the skin then rinse—simple as) but it left my face feeling smooth, balanced and cleaner than even my beloved Clarisonic ever did. After using the soap regularly for just a week I already totally see a difference in the size of my pores and they’re so much less clogged. LOVE. If there is one product you try from Beautycounter after reading this post I would absolutely recommend it to be this soap!
For the same reasons I was excited to try the charcoal bar I was thrilled to give the Balancing Mask a go.

I’d never used a mask before but loved that it provided a more in depth cleanse than your everyday face wash. Rich in nutrients, the balancing mask uses the same charcoal to purify and balance the skin. In just ten minutes it absorbs any excessive oil and draws out impurities in your skin. As it dried and slightly tightened on my skin I could see actually see little pinpricks of oil being pulled out of my pores (gross but cool). It washes off really easily which is a perk because I was expecting to have to really rub it off but that was so not the case. After gently rinsing it off with a warm washcloth my face glowed like I had just had a professional facial—amazing! Side note: it also smells really good!
The Dew Skin Tinted Moisturiser immediately became a part of my daily makeup routine.

As you guys already know I am SUPER active and so not the type of girl to spend anymore than 5 minutes on my makeup regardless of where I am going. I hate that I have such an uneven skin tone due to so many years of acne and *cringe* definitely some sun damage from too many hours at the beach. The tinted moisturizer is like the beauty product that was literally MADE for me. Wash your face, and spread this on like any other moisturiser and voila! Skin is clean, hydrated and literally glowing. It has just enough tint to balance out my skin tone if I am having a relatively good day, skin wise. It’s by no means full coverage but for someone who doesn’t like to put a lot of effort into makeup but also feels like they should probably be doing something before they leave the house and face the world this is the stuff for you.
Finally I tried the Sheer Lipstick in Petal.

Like I said before, I am so not the kind of girl that spends hours and hours on make up but this sheer lipstick is like lipstick for dummies in the most perfect way. It’s pretty sheer so it’s easy to put on without feeling like you’re colouring outside the lines, it’s got a little hint of sparkle, and it smells FABULOUS. It may just be the color I picked but it’s not hugely pigmented and looks super natural (which is GREAT) but if you’re looking for something a little more dramatic this may not be the thing for you. I, however, love it for day to day and am so excited to add it to my growing little beauty routine.
I’ve been using the products regularly for about a week now and am noticing major differences in the health of my skin. My face is feeling smoother, more even toned and my pores are a fraction of what they used to be. Now that I am more educated on the prevalence and effects of the scary, scary chemicals that lurk in so many of the products I had been using all my life I am trying to be so much more aware of not only what i am putting inside my body but what I am putting on my body as well!
Finally, I just love is how simple and low maintenance everything I picked out was to use. While staying on top of skin maintenance while on the road can be tricky things like the Balancing Mask would have been so easy to whip out while I was traveling up and down Australia’s East Coast and I so wish I had discovered Beautycounter earlier!
